Medical Research

Lions Australia has a proud history in Medical Research, including the bionic ear and cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil. We also inspired a young Fred Hollows and continue to provide funding for a range of research initiatives involving diabetes and autism.

Since we began in 1963, Qld & Northern NSW Lions Medical Research Foundation has supported internationally recognised medical research by funding early career biomedical scientists. We support our researchers in making medical discoveries that benefit all Australians, by offering hope, and creating opportunities for everyone to live healthier and longer lives.

There are many successful medical researchers who have received funding through the Foundation. Today, the Foundation has supported medical research at the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research, the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, Queensland University of Technology, and the School of Medical Science, Griffith University.

Other notable recipients are Professor Ian Frazer who received early funding for his world-famous research into cervical cancer and the development of Gardasil, Professor Lawrie Hirst's ground-breaking Optical research which led to the Queensland Eye Bank for storage of corneal, Professor Paul Colditz' Perinatal research into preterm babies and Dr Kathryn Buller's research which examined brain injury in neonates plus many other worthy researchers.

The Queensland and Northern New South Wales Lions Medical Research Foundation is committed to start-up funding for world class medical research.
