Our Club

Lions Club of Brisbane Chinese Inc. (BC Lions) was established in 1996 with the commitment to making our society a better place to live, work and grow. We are a group of volunteers who collaborate with like-minded people dedicated to effecting real change that people can see and feel, and create opportunities for present and future generations. Our members do whatever is needed to help their local communities. Everywhere we work, we make friends – with children who need eyeglasses, with seniors who don’t have enough to eat, and with people we may never meet. At BC Lions we make things happen.

As a member of Lions Australia you will experience a number of personal benefits including leadership skills, a sense of self-worth and purpose, business skills, networking opportunities and lifelong friendships.

We are part of the The World’s Largest Service Club Organisation

Lions Clubs International has more than 1.48 million members in 48,000 clubs in 220 countries, making it the world's largest service membership organisation. Melvin Jones founded it on 7 June 1917 in Chicago, United States. It is also one of the most effective. Our members do whatever they can to help their local communities. Everywhere we work, we make friends. With children who need eyeglasses, with seniors who don’t have enough to eat and with people we may never meet. Our impact in the community is far and wide.

Kindness in Action

When caring people join together and take action to make their community better, it’s a beautiful thing and an incredible feeling for everyone involved. That’s Lions. Being a Lion is about leading by example, building relationships, improving the world through kindness, and serving together to make a lasting impact and change lives. When you become a Lion, you become part of a global network of volunteers working together to make a difference.

Where There’s a Need, There’s a Lion

Lions Motto: We Serve

Lions Acronym: Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations’ Safety

Lions Mission: To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs.

Lions Vision: To be the global leader in community and humanitarian service.

Our Achievements

BC Lions has a remarkable history of achievement in disaster and emergency relief, medical research and community service. The support we give contributes to funding internationally recognised medical research in a variety of areas including kidney disease, asthma, immunology, ophthalmology, toxicology, perinatal, schizophrenia, diabetes, cord blood, cancer therapies, and bone and joint disease. We also assist with local community fundraising for special causes and help with the development and building of local parks, community venues and sporting centres. By consistently contributing our time and efforts, we can raise funds to improve the quality of life or even give people the chance and hope to live.

Over the years, we’ve served with uncommon kindness, putting the needs of our neighbours, our communities and our world first. We look back at our past stories with pride, but we know it’s only the beginning. Every day, we’re building on our legacy with the goal of making an even greater impact in the future. We live our motto “We Serve” passionately. At BC Lions, we make things happen.

Why Lions?

Every dollar raised is donated and disbursed back to those in need. All funds received from the community are kept in a specifically designated bank account separate from the funds required for the administration of the Club. This way, you know that 100% of the money you donate will be put to proper use. All members, who in addition to volunteering their time, pay membership fees which largely covers the administration expense of the Club.

The discussion of politics and religion is forbidden. At the heart of Lions clubs, there is only one constant: service. Whenever a Lions Club gets together, problems get smaller and communities get better. That’s because we help where help is needed – in our own communities and around the world – with unmatched integrity and energy. In hospitals and senior centres, in regions battered by natural disasters, in schools and eye-glass recycling centres, Lions are doing community volunteer work, helping, leading, planning and supporting. Because we’re local, we can serve the unique needs of the communities we live in. And because we’re global, we can address challenges that go beyond borders.

Our Global Causes

Every journey begins with a single step. One act of service, one encouraging word, one gift of generosity is often all it takes to bring hope where it’s needed most. While each Lions club has its own service focus, there are five global causes of particular interest that have been identified, and voted on, by members and supported by our association.

·       Diabetes: We serve to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve quality of life for those diagnosed.

·       Vision: We serve to prevent avoidable blindness and improve quality of life for people who are blind and visually impaired.

·       Hunger: We serve to ensure all community members have access to nutritious foods.

·       Environment: We serve to sustainably protect and restore our environment to improve the well-being of all communities.

·       Childhood Cancer: We serve to help those affected by childhood cancer survive and thrive.

Together, we serve

Every journey begins with a single step. One act of service, one encouraging word, one gift of generosity is often all it takes to bring hope where it’s needed most.

Over the last 100 years, the kindness of Lions and Leos has multiplied across borders, oceans, and continents. With over 1.4 million members, we now have an opportunity to truly change our world.

That’s why we’re uniting our global service around five areas of need. These Global Causes present significant challenges to humanity, and we believe it’s our turn to meet them.
